Seven distinguished Colorado postsecondary institutions receive the inaugural designation
DENVER – Nov. 4, 2024: Kicking off Career Development Month in November, the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) announces the new Career Connected Campus Designation for higher education institutions and the seven institutions receiving the designation. The Designation sets a high standard for how campuses engage in practices that prepare students for employment commensurate with their postsecondary credentials. As part of the Workforce Determinants of Student Success initiative, WDSS builds on the existing Social Determinants of Student Success work and aims to emphasize career preparation.
“As we kick off Career Development Month, I am thrilled to announce the new Career Connected Campus Designation which highlights our commitment to connecting students with the skills needed to get good-paying and in-demand jobs. By focusing on practical skills and career readiness, these campuses equip students to thrive in the exciting and innovative sectors of the future, helping us meet the evolving needs of our thriving economy,” said Governor Polis.
The checklist prioritizes practical skills, professional development, and career readiness alongside academic learning. A career connected college or university campus is committed to empowering students with the knowledge, skills and resources needed to succeed in their chosen careers and make meaningful contributions to their respective industries.
“We are proud of the strides we’ve made in the apprenticeship, internship and work-based learning spaces, but also recognize there is still work to be done,” said Dr. Angie Paccione, CDHE executive director. “These opportunities align with the needs of Colorado’s high-growth industries. The Career Connected designation underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to high-quality education and training for all residents, preparing them for success in the modern workforce.”
Seven distinguished Colorado postsecondary institutions received the Career Connected Campus Designation for 2024-2027— Colorado College, Colorado School of Mines, CSU Global, Pueblo Community College, Regis University, University of Colorado Denver, and the University of Denver. This inaugural honor recognizes institutions that excel in integrating academic curriculum with work-based learning experiences, empowering students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in high-demand, high-wage careers. Representing both two-year and four-year colleges, private and public institutions, and urban and rural communities, these colleges exemplify a strong commitment to student success and workforce readiness across Colorado.
Gov. Polis signed a proclamation supporting Career Development Month organized by the Colorado Career Development Association (CCDA), a division of the National Career Development Association (NCDA). The proclamation supports career development practitioners in obtaining and maintaining certifications, credentials, and continuing education to best serve those seeking career assistance; and champion the mission and vision of NCDA to "inspire and empower individuals to achieve their career and life goals.”
The state's strategic plan for higher education, Building Skills in an Evolving Economy, focuses on advancing the economic mobility of Colorado's learners and earners by aligning postsecondary talent development with industry and statewide needs.
